Dalida's Bang Bang on Les Amours Imaginaires

I love this song called "Bang Bang" which you find in Xavier Dolan's second film called Les Amours Imaginaires  (or Heartbeats in English).  Its such a rich song and sets the mood and tone for what is coming in the film,  Xavier, by the way, is our young actor/film director from Montreal, Quebec (Canada).  Check it out, both the song and the film.  - Volker

relaxing

Right now I'd relaxing (or chillin"as is often said these days) after spending some time in Vancouver. It's pouring rain but I'm sure there's plenty of snow up in the higher elevations, enough to make the skiers more than happy! So, to relax I'm playing some 18th century classical music from northern Italy: organ accompanied by the hammered dulcimer (d.h. Hackbrett auf Deutsch). It's not a combination I've heard before and so when I saw the LP back in the 1980s, I snapped it up. Well what I'm listening to is a tape recording made from that LP. The LP is packed away somewhere in one of my many boxes that have yet to be unpacked. Who's music is playing? Melchiore Chiesa (?-1782), Pietro Beretti (around 1750) and Angelo Conti (?). As much as I love the organ, I love the hammered dulcimer even more. A most interesting combination!


I cooked up some beef vegetable soup for supper, slow-cooked and hearty! It was Earl Grey tea and Christmas cookies as a treat while waiting. There's some for work tomorrow and more for the next couple of days. I was getting tired of sandwiches and had to make a change!


So, if the likes of hot soup doesn't warm you on a cool, rainy evening, then perhaps getting together with a hot friend for some fun might help warm you up. Reead and Scott Herman in Cybersexy

Scott sent me an email last week with a link to a new video featuring the music of his friend, Reead, plus photos by photographer Michael Tammaro. Of course, the photos are of Scott Herman. Since the video is designated for those 18+, check out Scott's YouTube channel and sign in using your YouTube account to see the video. Personally, I don't see why its rated for 18+. There's nothing racy in it. Check that one out and compare it to the Reead video ("Baby") set in Paris. Some seem to have nothing better to do than to find fault in something. If you don't like it, don't watch it and if you've never seen it, why are you finding fault in it in the first place? Below is a photo of the musician friend. Kodo drums

I've wanted to buy a CD or two presenting Kodo drums but haven't done that yet. The above photo is from nymag.com and shows a couple of Kodo drummers doing their thing in plain, simple attire (fudoshi) much as the percussion is basic and primal. My view is that anyone cane get some rhythm going. "Kodo" has a double meaning in "hearbeat" on the one hand and "children of the drum" on the other or to "play simply with the heart of a child", this according to the article at nymag.com. I think we can all do that if given the chance. On a similar note, the Tao masters of martial arts and percussion will be in Vancouver on March 12th and 13th, 2010 to play the drums and appear at The Centre in Vancouver for the Performing Arts. I'm planning to see this performance. Something to look forward to! - V.

Jonas Brothers - part 2

Well, remember the photo in the last Jonas Brothers post? Its the one on their latest CD called "Lines, Vines and Trying Times", one I took the time to buy at HMV yesterday while in Vancouver. I even listened to it twice. Great sound and there's a hint of country music in a couple of songs, though I wouldn't call it country. Its just a hint as I mentioned. Just because I'm older doesn't mean I can't listen to and appreciate the sound coming from a younger generation. Its worth watching where their music career takes them. Check them out! Jonas Brothers

The Jonas Brothers have been in the papers and other media lately as I mentioned in my previous post, so here's a photo of them to drool over. Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas made up the trio, an up and coming pop boy band (USA). They're rather hot-looking but their interest in music gets my interest alone, not just their hot, sexy looks. Nick was discovered singing in a barber shop at age 7 and their musical career progressed from there. Their latest CD called "Lines, Vines and Trying Times" (2009) was released on June 15, 2009. restful Sunday - not exactly

Well, Sunday was supposed to be a day of rest, sort of, after an active day Saturday. On my journey Saturday I walked down to Queens Park near home and then on toward Fraser Cemetery in Sapperton before heading on to downtown Vancouver by SkyTrain with Stanley Park being the focus that day. I did a bit too much walking and got a bit more sun than was wise, so I thought of staying at home today. That meant a leisurely breakfast, checking emails and such and then getting some needed laundry done and out of the way. After that was done, I cooked up some soup (rice with vegetables, pork) and then prepared a bread dough to bake around suppertime. As the bread (olive) was baking, the aroma of fresh baked bread filled the entire apartment. I'll take some in to work over the next two days along with soup made today. I also spent some time listening to music on Radio Canada's "Espace Musique" that was playing various kinds of music from Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, etc, and then I got down to playing some cds toward evening (Austrian and Bavarian folk music). With the warmer weather my computer shuts down unannounced at the most inconvenient times, so posts may be sparse during hot weather. It likely has to do with the heat generated by the new hard drive which is not exactly as the old one it replaced but a new one that fits this machine would cost me over $600. I opted for a cheaper hard drive and put the money into a new work station. Anyway, more posts coming, including Saturday's activities. Have a great week!!! - V.

Joey McIntyre – Stay the Same – music video

I've had a cd of this piece by Joey McIntyre for some years now since my mother's passing in 1999. I reminds me so much of what I love about my friend Brad, so much so that there's nothing I would want to change. I know deep down that he knows that. He just has to love and accept himself for what he is. I'm sure he'll come to terms with that in due time. In the meantime, its his life, his journey! By the way, Joey was once of the Kids on the Block along with Marky Mark (Mark Walberg) back in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Enjoy the song and what it has to say!

Matins Gris

Currently before going to bed I'm playing one of my favourite CDs entitled "Matins Gris" recorded by Ocora/Radio France in Paris, July 1989, and featuring the music of Christian Vesvre and Serge Desaunay who play music for bagpipes and accordeons (musique pour cornemuses et accordeons). One of my favourite melodies, aside from "Matins Gris" (5'14), is "Eraglubeidolum" (2'14). The CD is a co-production between l'Agence des Musiques Traditionelles d'Auvergne and Ocora. With all the melodies we have a duration of 61'28. The bagpipe/accordeon combination is one of my favourites. Check it out!

Ludwig Spohr - Violin Concerto No. 1 part 1

Ludwig Spohr (also known as Louis Spohr outside of Germany) was born on April 5, 1784 in Braunschweig, Germany to Karl Heinrich Spohr and Juliane Ernestine Luise Henke. Ludwig could play a number of instruments by the age of 15 and was touring with a mentor, an accomplished musician himself, by the age of 18. I have listened to this concerto a number of times and once my stuff comes out of storage, I will be able to listen to the complete concerto in far better quality than you can listen to it here. The young man that posted this video on YouTube can be seen playing the violin in the Tonhalle in Zurich, Switzerland. - Volker
